Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have made some information get around a lot quicker than other social mediums such as television, radio, newspapers etc.
Such that in the case of ‘Kate’s Party’ on Facebook: recently an event was created for ‘Kate’s Party’ which was mistakenly set to an open/public event held on private property- when it was in fact meant to be a private and small event. After having more than 60 000 people RSVP that they were attending the event it was revealed to be a hoax and later withdrawn from the site by administrators.
The creator of the even claims he wanted to “see how quickly events could go viral through sites like Facebook and Twitter;” and thus his wish fulfilled with the amount of people RSVP-ing and also the amount of ‘copy-cat’ events and groups that other users have made to cash in on the debacle.
One event claiming to be ‘Kate’s Party’ stated that the party was endorsed/sponsored by a certain sports supplements- a thrifty attempt to advertise, capitalising on the hype surrounding the event.
Many articles have been written including these found on news.com.au, one as the event was put up and also one after the event was said to take place as police where expecting a riot with the amount of people said to be in attendance.

I just found the facebook usage statics.

Australia and Mexico are 2 of the top 30 countries in the world that use facebook.

Australia has 7,922,140 facebook users.

Mexico has 9,208,560 facebook users.

So after all there are more facebook users in Mexico than Australia, but still VB has more fans than Corona.

One very important thing that we need to take in consideration is the population of each country and the percentage of Internet users in each country.

Australia’s population goes up to 22, 321,406 habitants. (http://www.abs.gov.au/)

The world bank statics say that in 2008 70% of Australians were using the Internet. On the other hand, only 22% of Mexicans were users.

Even though 70% might seem a very high percentage vs. 22%, there are more mexicans with Internet usage than Australians, and that is only because Mexico’s population is larger.

This might affect the time that internet users spend in the web only for pleasure. Facebook is a social network which we visit to entertain ourselves.

This can also affect the number of fans that each beer has on their facebook page. Another thing that I think affects those numbers, is that facebook is used in Mexico mostly by medium/high class people, which is the smallest economical/social amount of people in the country.

Facebook product pages are an affective way to promote products as facebook has over 100 million users and facebook pages are indexed and searchable inside facebook as well as outside of facebook, dramatically increasing the chances of people finding the business online. Facebook pages allow the for a particular product to not only be circulated throughout the facebook network amongst friends and be searched in facebook, but also allows for the products facebook page to show up in some google searches as well.

Since I joined the VB and Corona page, I get on my facebook homepage all the updates of both products.

VB‘s facebook’s status encourage causes mainly. For example, this is the latest one: Hey guys, as a part of the Raise A Glass Appeal we have created an application so that you can nominate the Australian hero you will raise a glass to on ANZAC day and then share it with your friends! Check out the “Raise a glass” tab above.

All other comments relate to the same. VB always putting people together for a cause, and Corona for promoting its events, that will gather Corona’s fans in a specific time and place.

I think that VB makes people gather together via facebook, while Corona makes them gather in an special event where they can see each other face to face.

WHile VB is more like a social network, Corona works more as a business network since it is always promoting the product. The page announces trivias and competitions in order to win Corona’s products or tickets to events.

As each beer has its own way of promotion, the goal is the same, and that is to promote and gather the beer’s fans so they can create a closer relationship with the product.

Comparing Corona Mexico and VB Australia

comparing the two facebook pages, the corona mexico page and the VB facebook page, it seems that Australians are much more excited and happy about their beer, with the Vb page attracting 11,718 fans while the Corona Mexico page only has 4,915 fans.
